According to the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, an adequate daily fluid intake is approximately 15.5 cups for men and 11.5 cups for women. This means the vast majority of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

Symptoms of chronic dehydration

  • Dry, flaky skin
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Constipation
  • Constant fatigue
  • Ongoing muscle weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent headaches

Three signs you need IV treatment for dehydration

While chronic dehydration can be corrected with 1-2 weeks of proper fluid intake from home, more severe cases of dehydration may require a visit to your local urgent care for IV fluid treatment.

  • Lack of perspiration
This is a big sign that you’re seriously dehydrated and in need of IV fluid treatment. Sweat helps your body cool down. If you’re exerting yourself and not sweating, you may be at risk for a heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
  • Dark-colored urine
Dark-colored urine and decreased urine output is another sign of severe dehydration. IV fluid treatment can help correct this dangerous side effect of dehydration. Our kidneys help filter waste, and when they don’t have enough fluid; they are unable to perform at their optimal levels. This causes the urine to become more concentrated and darker.
  • Dizziness
Severe dehydration can lead to a drop in blood pressure, which means your brain isn’t getting enough oxygen. This can lead to feelings of dizziness and should be treated quickly with IV fluid treatment at your local urgent care.
