Sprained Ankle Symptoms and Urgent Care Treatment

Ankle injury has become one of the most common forms of injuries nowadays. This is because one can suffer one while doing the lightest of tasks like walking or even jogging.

Athletes and factory workers are one of the most affected groups of people due to the nature of their work.

A sprain occurs when force or abnormal stretching is applied to the ligament that provides the connection between the bones of the ankles. When the foot suddenly rolls or twists, the ankle joint may be forced out of its normal position.

Employee safety measures can be sensitized and implemented through the OSHA training requirements. The occupational safety and health administration have strived to make workers know the appropriate measures to take to keep themselves safe at work.

We will have a look at the symptoms of a sprained ankle as well as how to take good care of your ankle once you suffer one.

1. Swelling

This is the most common symptom that shows you have suffered an ankle sprain. It is brought about by increased fluid in the tissue.

2. Ankle Injury Pain

The pain can be immense hence hindering activities like walking, especially if you move your foot in the direction of the ligament that was affected. The pain occurs because the nerves become too sensitive.

Pressing the sore area is discouraged as it may make the pain worse.

3. Skin Discoloration

After suffering a sprain, blood flow to the affected area tends to increase. This will most likely make the ankle and the area surrounding it become red.

4. Limited Flexibility

You won’t have the ability to move your ankle with comfort as it becomes difficult to put weight on it.

Urgent Care and Treatment to Ankle Sprains

1. Use Crutches

If need be, try to use crutches as walking without them will further damage the ankle and make the healing process take a while.

2. Rest

This is usually recommended as it gives the affected joint time to heal. Try not to subject the affected part to unnecessary movements.
3.Elevation
It’s advisable to elevate the injured ankle at a level above your heart. This also reduces swelling.

4. Ice

This method is preferably used immediately after suffering the ankle sprain. It reduces the swelling immensely, and you should not place it directly to your skin. Use a piece of cloth.

 5. Compression

A bandage or a trainer’s tape can be used to wrap the ankle. They should not be applied tightly so as not to inhibit free movement of the ankle and reduce ample blood supply in the area. They are also good at reducing swelling.

6. Use Anti-inflammatory Pain Medication

This will both reduce the pain and control inflammation.
