How is COVID-19 detected?

The virus that causes COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, can be detected in two ways during active infection: an antigen test or a molecular test.

After infection, it can be detected in your body using an antibody test, which shows whether you’ve ever had COVID-19.

Antigen Test

An antigen test detects the presence of antigens in your body that can be found on the virus’s surface. Antigen tests are administered using a nasal swab inserted into one or both of your nostrils. They are easy to use and rapid.

Results are available within 1-2 days. These tests are most accurate during the first 5-7 days of symptom onset. Inaccurate results are known to occur. Often, the best backup to a negative antigen test is a molecular test to verify accuracy. It is recommended that you remain in quarantine until your symptoms subside, even if your test is negative.

Molecular Test

A molecular, or PCR, test works to detect the molecular material of the virus in your body. After sample collection, your test is analyzed in a laboratory to determine the presence or absence of molecular markers. This test is performed in the same manner as an antigen test, using a nasal swab in one or more nostrils.

Test results are nearly 100% accurate, and results are confirmed to each patient within 3-5 days.

Antibody Testing

An excellent option for those who may have been exposed or asymptomatic, the antibody test works to detect antibodies in your body that match those identified to combat the COVID-19 virus. This test is performed by a simple blood draw and results typically come back within a week.

Who should get tested?

Anyone who has been directly exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or those experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19 should be tested. COVID-19 testing is an optimal way to stop the virus from spreading further.

Even if you’re not symptomatic or have no knowledge of being exposed to someone with COVID-19, testing is essential to stop the spread of the virus, especially if you plan on traveling or gathering.

Both PCR and rapid testing are available options for a safe return to school, sports, and work before or after travel or other circumstances. Don’t delay results, return to your normal activities sooner with rapid testing at Coastal Urgent Care of Bossier and Haughton.
