The virus that causes COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, can be detected in two ways during active infection: an antigen test or a molecular test.
After infection, it can be detected in your body using an antibody test, which shows whether you’ve ever had COVID-19.
An antigen test detects the presence of antigens in your body that can be found on the virus’s surface. Antigen tests are administered using a nasal swab inserted into one or both of your nostrils. They are easy to use and rapid.
Results are available within 1-2 days. These tests are most accurate during the first 5-7 days of symptom onset. Inaccurate results are known to occur.
