Can You Get a Physical at Urgent Care?

Although physicals are anything but urgent, unless they’re overdue, you can still get one yearly at Coastal Urgent Care of Ruston.

Nearly 44 million people get physicals every year. Whether it’s needed for work or sports, or you’re just hoping to stay on top of your health, regular physicals are highly recommended for everyone.

Why should I get a physical?

Not only are physicals helpful in keeping track of your health, but they are also a great way for providers to detect diseases and conditions early, especially when some of these issues have no symptoms.

Establishing a baseline for your health is vital to track any changes that your body may be experiencing, big or small. Physicals are also a great way to foster a positive patient-doctor relationship. When you feel comfortable with your provider, you are more open to hearing about lifestyle recommendations and treatment options.

How often should I get a physical?

Although annual physicals are ideal, healthy adults with no significant health conditions or diseases should consider a physical based on their age.

Here is a breakdown of how often a healthy adult should be seen for a wellness checkup:

  • Ages 19-21 years: once every 2-3 years
  • Ages 22-30: once every 2-3 years
  • Ages 30-40: once every other year
  • Ages 40-50: once every other year
  • Over 50: once every year

Because sports, workplace, and school physicals are used to determine whether or not you’re physically fit and able enough to perform the tasks required, they are typically required once a year or once a season. We encourage you to check with your organization to confirm the precise requirements.

What should I expect?

No matter what age you are, everyone should follow a few guidelines.

Make sure to:

  • Get your blood pressure checked at least once every 2 years.
  • Have your vaccinations up-to-date, especially related to your job status or sports eligibility.

During your physical with the urgent care, you can expect the following standards of care to be performed in most cases:

  • Height and weight check
  • Body mass index analysis
  • Blood pressure reading
  • An evaluation of your heart, lungs and abdomen
  • A look in your ears, nose and throat
  • An eyesight check
  • A test of how strong and flexible you are
  • A urinalysis

Other tests and examinations may be performed based on your health history, current conditions, changes in your health history, or requirements by a sports organization or workplace.

Do I need to schedule an appointment?

Appointments are recommended because of the nature of care, but walk-ins are welcome 7 days a week.

If you’re hoping to be in and out quickly, an appointment helps to reduce your wait time and provide the appropriate wait time for others with urgent needs who may have unexpected changes in their health.  For a physical exam, feel free to stop in any day of the week. We are open 7 days and happy to help you stay on top of your health and wellness. For more information, contact us today.
